Los antiguos mexicanos respetaban mucho a los "tlacuilos", que eran los artistas e historiadores que se dedicaban a escribir los códices. De ellos decían: "Los que están mirando, los que cuentan, los que vuelven ruidosamente las hojas de los libros de pinturas. Los que tienen en su poder la tinta negra y roja, las pinturas. Ellos nos llevan, nos guían, nos dicen el camino." The tlacuilos, that is, the artists and historians who devoted themselves to writing the codices, were highly respected by the ancient Mexicans who described them as: " Those who are looking, those who tell, those who noisily turn the sheets of the books of paintings. Those who have in their power the black and red ink, the paintings. They take us, guide us, show us the way." En resúmen, el tlacuilo, era el diseñador gráfico de aquellos tiempos, aunque a diferencia nuestra, él sí tenía un profundo respeto y conocimiento hacia su disciplina. Ojalá antes de pintar, dialogar o diseñar, los tlacuilos modernos, aprendiéramos a inmiscuirnos en aquello que queremos transmitir. We may thus regard the tlacuilo as the graphic designer of those times, though he differs from us in that he did show a deep respect and knowledge towards his discipline. It is desirable that before painting, talking or designing, we, the modern tlacuilos, would learn to dwell deeply into that which we want to transmit. En la sierra norte de Puebla, en la comunidad de San Pablito, desde hace más de 2000 años se utiliza el papel amate en rituales y fiestas de la comunidad. ¿Conoces el proceso para elaborarlo? Te sorprenderás al descubrir como al ritmo del munito, la corteza de los árboles jonote mezclada con cal, agua y ceniza, se va transformando en tiras largas de papel.

 

In the community of San Pablito, in the state of Puebla, the papel amate is a milenary tradition and is used in rituals and community festivities. Do you know the process to prepare it? The beautiful bamboo paper, made from the root of bamboo, is produced by the same amatero craftsmen of Mexico. It is really an art. The sole paper without painting it, is an artistic work in itself. Since 2001 I have worked with this paper and it has been a great delight to submerge in its suggestive textures, that always speak to me and guide my lines towards expressive and unique ideas. La magia mística de este papel es una herramienta, un juguete más para despertar sonrisas y gozo en los que admiran mis personajes, los cuales adquieren un perfil natural y amable a través de su color. The mystical magic of this paper is a tool, one more toy to bring about smiles and pleasure in those who admire my personages, who acquire a natural and kind profile by means of their color.
